These remarkable individuals amplify their distinctive perspectives and artistic energies to defy flat interpretations that previously disregarded their content depth. Extricating themselves from underserved communities, these artists have emerged from margin to spotlight, radically transforming the narrative in 2023.


Challenging Boundaries and Promoting Fluidity

One disrupting aspect in their work dynamic is the revision of art genres, resulting from crossover influences drawn from both local narratives as well as global movements. Radically combating static distinctions, these artists disseminate works beyond conventional categorizations.


Brittany Williams, a stunning abstract painter, blends vibrant African artistic influences with instinctive freestyle techniques seamlessly challenging notions of realism.


Brittney Leeanne Williams is a Chicago-based artist, originally from Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami (Untitled Art Fair), London, Venice, Italy (Venice Biennale), Antwerp, Copenhagen, and Hong Kong, as well as in Chicago and throughout the Midwest. Williams attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008-09). She is a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant recipient and a Luminarts Fellow. Williams’ artist residencies include Arts + Public Life (University of Chicago) and McColl Center for Art + Innovation, among others.

At present, a new era with enormous potential is gathering way as global audiences increasingly discover the extraordinary talents weaving vivid voicing spaces challenged only alphabetically mapping with thunder culture ancestors pulsing timeless vital triumphant sprawling resonense.


In 2023, Black underground visionaries showcase immense fortitude in grasping the helm of narrative authority, defying expectations thrust upon them, ultimately transcending art-world barriers.
