How To Get Started as a Visual Artist

Are you a beginner artist looking to get started in the world of visual art? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Visual art can be both fun and challenging, but with the right tips and tricks, you’ll be creating masterpieces in no time.

Start simple.

Don’t overwhelm yourself by tackling complex projects right away. This can leave you feeling overwhelmed and defeated before you begin. Start with something simple and manageable, such as a still life, a landscape, or a portrait. This will help you get a feel for the medium and how it works.

Have a solid plan.

Before you start, make sure you have a plan for your project. What tools do you need? What colors will you use? What kind of composition will you use? How will you lay out the elements of the painting? Having a plan will help make the process easier and more enjoyable.

Experiment with different mediums.

There are so many different mediums you can use to create art, such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, pastels, and more. Try different mediums to see which one you like best. When you do this, you give yourself the opportunity to expand and experiment - making each piece truly your own.

Practice, practice, practice.

The best way to become a better artist is to practice. Draw or paint for a set amount of time each day and your skills will improve. Being consistent will prove to be a benefit, as you can measure and compare your growth as an artist over time. For example, beginning you may struggle drawing hands, and by the end of the year, you're a master. Stay focused and positive.

Take classes or find an art mentor.

Taking classes or finding an art mentor can help you learn the fundamentals of art and provide guidance and support as you progress. Finding an art mentor or class you can relate to and connect with is very crucial. Listen to your instincts, if you feel called to the space, open yourself up to the possibilities.

Get inspired.

Look at artwork by other artists, go out and explore nature, or take photographs to get inspired. Use this inspiration to create your own artwork. As the old saying goes, art imitates life. Get out and live!

Find a community.

Join an online or local art group or find a local art gallery. This will help you meet other artists and get feedback on your artwork. Connecting with other artists can give you insight into the journey and encouragement along the way.

Following these tips will help you get started in the world of visual art. Good luck, and enjoy the process!
